Scrutinize Every Cost

I worked for a $100 million company that restricted development team accounts to $100/month. At first, I was like, "What? Are you really going to nickel and dime me for testing a resource that costs $4 per day?" Doing so, I agreed and became a believer. Continually asking myself how to reduce cost led me to the CloudFront/S3/React/API Gateway/Lambda stack, a true joy to operate.

DevOps engineers, ask yourselves every day:

  • Are all my resources utilized effectively?

  • Can I reduce my costs by improving my architecture?

  • Can I simplify and improve performance?

  • Am I close to exceeding my allotted service units?

In doing so, you will build better, cheaper software and will become a better engineer.
